Stanislas Wawrinka stuns David Ferrer to claim the title – Portugal Open 2013
Swiss veteran, Stanislas Wawrinka, surprised everyone by defeating the top seeded Spaniard, David Ferrer, in the final of Portugal Open on Sunday. The world number 15 finally ended his title drought of the running season by dumping the hot favourite contender in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, in Oeiras, Portugal.
No one expected the Spanish number two to suffer a cracking defeat in merely 65 minutes at the hands of the inferior ranked Swiss. Ferrer outplayed Wawrinka in the final of Copa Claro earlier this season but it was the payback time for the Swiss. Wawrinka blasted at the top seeded contender in the opening set and registered a breadstick to get into the driving seat. Ferrer made his attempt to turn the tables on his opponent in the following set but couldn’t do much against the might of the second seeded Wawrinka, eventually finishing on the losing side.
“It feels great to have won a title again, as it was one of my goals at the start of the year," Wawrinka said in his post match reviews. "It was a challenge against a Top 4 player. I am very happy with the way I played today. I was really focused and I made it difficult for him on my serve."
Wawrinka was off to the best of the possible starts in the opening set, nailing two consecutive serve breaks and rocketing away to an unassailable lead of 5-0 in no time. Ferrer was baffled from the sudden onslaught from the Swiss opponent and couldn’t recover from the early damage. He finally held his serve for the first time in the sixth game of the opener but utterly failed to register any break point. Wawrinka comprehensively served out of the first set at 5-1 and got one up in the contest.
A very cautious start was witnessed from Ferrer in the following set of the match. Both players went neck-to-neck with one another and held their respective serves in the opening eight games of the set. Wawrinka managed to crack the all-important break point in the ninth game and then served out of the match at 5-4 to bag the Portugal crown convincingly.
