Stanislas Wawrinka triumph over Guillermo Garcia-Lopez to enter semis – Grand Prix Hassan II 2013
Top seeded Swiss, Stanislas Wawrinka, blasted past the Spanish contender, Guillermo Garcia-Lopez, with a breadstick at the Grand Prix Hassan II 2013 on Friday. He penned down a 6-1, 6-2 victory against the Spaniard to power into the final four at this clay
court tournament taking place in Casablanca, Morocco.
The Swiss veteran stayed on track to capture his fourth ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour title. With this victory, Wawrinka not only avenged his loss at the Mutua Madrid Open two years ago but also take a 5-2 lead in the head-to-head
series against the 29-year-old.
"I'm happy about my level of play today," said the Swiss in a courtside interview after winning the match. "I came back to Casablanca to win here again."
The former world number nine, Wawrinka made thunderous entry into this match. After Garcia-Lopez held his serve in the second game, the Swiss went berserk and reeled off five games. As a result, the 28-year-old pulled out the opener with a breadstick.
Wawrinka kept momentum sailing in the following set. He got the coveted break in the opening game and jumped to a 2-0 lead. The Swiss cashed another break chance in the fifth game and eventually sealed the set by winning six games to two.
On the whole, Wawrinka showed good tennis skills. He clobbered a better first serve share of 48 per cent as opposed to his rival’s 39 per cent and brilliantly marked 19 out of 25 points on it. The Swiss spilled two double faults but smashed five aces to
dominate.
The Swiss, who won a gold medal at the doubles event in Olympics, will face off former world number five, Tommy Robredo.
Wawrinka reflected about his next match-up:
"Robredo is a very good player. We practised together last weekend and you can see that he's in great form. I will have to take the initiative and play aggressively. He's always difficult to beat."
The Spanish veteran battled past the fourth seed, Benoit Paire, in a three-set mouth-watering battle. He recorded a 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-0 victory against the French seed to set-up this epic semi-final encounter.
