Stanislas Wawrinka undoes Potito Starace to move into next round – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Swiss Stanislas Wawrinka moved into the second round at the 2011 Wimbledon Championships on Monday, 20th June after doing away with Italian Potito Starace in straight sets. The Swiss took a little over ninety minutes
as he clinched a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 win against the Italian.
Already leading 1-0 in the career head to head, Wawrinka sailed to a comfortable 2-0 lead as he sealed his first round victory in three sets against Starace.
Starting the first set on an even footing, both players held their serves for the first six games to keep the score tied at 3-3. Facing Starace at 4-3, Wawrinka forced errors on the Italian’s serve to clinch a lucky break going
5-3 in the game score. Serving for the set at 5-3, the Swiss wasted no time or point, as he went one up in the set score, securing a 6-3 win for himself.
Although Wawrinka registered a meagre 68% on his first serve, he managed a 100 % conversion on it. Throwing four aces, to Starace’s zero, and thirteen winners in the mix, the Swiss was able to clinch a 6-3 win in only twenty five
minutes.
Despite trailing in the set score, Starace was determined to stay in the game. Matching blow for blow, Starace kept the score tied for eight games. However, a costly double fault in the ninth gave Wawrinka the lucky break he needed
as he poised himself to serve out the set at 5-4. A couple of errant strokes from Starace and powerful aces from the Swiss put Wawrinka two up in the set score as he clinched a 6-4 win in the second set.
The third followed the same suit as one lucky break gave Wawrinka the match as he secured another 6-4 win in the third set.
In over ninety minutes, the Swiss converted a total of 85 percent on his first serve including eleven aces and forty seven winners. Although the Swiss faced no break points, he did, however, gave up on a lot of chances as he converted
only three of sixteen breakpoint opportunities.
Wawrinka moves on ahead to play either qualifier Martin Fischer from Austria or the Italian lucky loser Simone Bolelli.
