Stanislas Wawrinka upsets Alexandr Dolgopolov to reach round four – US Open 2012
Swiss star, Stanislas Wawrinka, got the better of the 14th seed, Alexandr Dolgopolov, in straight sets at the Flushing Meadows 2012 on Sunday. He penned down a 6-4, 6-4, 6-2 victory against the Ukrainian number one to book a spot in the pre-quarters
at this final of the four Grand Slam events taking place in Corona Park in New York City, United States.
Seeded 18th in this event, Wawrinka sowed awe-inspiring skills to outrun the 23-year-old in their second meeting in the Louis Armstrong Stadium at this major hard court event. After recording the victory, the Swiss not only avenged his loss at
the Abierto Mexicano Telcel in Acapulco last season but also levelled the FedEx ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series by 1-1 against Dolgopolov.
The former Top 10 re-ignited his spark at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. He drew the first blood in the opening game to take the initial lead. Wawrinka then kept his entire serves without facing any breakpoint and clinched the opener with
a 6-4 score line in almost half hour.
Wawrinka maintained consistency in his game in the follow-up set. He quickly bagged his entire serves without facing any trouble and cashed in one out of seven break chances in the fifth game, eventually sealing the set by winning six games to four.
Ranked 19th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Wawrinka went out of control in the third set. He hammered massive forehands to reel off the opening four games before Dolgopolov could hold on. The Swiss held his remaining serves
with poise and pocketed the set with a 6-2 success.
Next challenge for Wawrinka is the defending champion, Novak Djokovic, who trounces the 31st seed, Julien Benneteau, in straight sets to set up this battle.
The fourth seed, David Ferrer, also stole the limelight later that day. He battled past the former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt, in a four-set thriller to progress. The Spanish number two lost the second set but found his rhythm afterwards, eventually
carving out the victory with a 7-6(9), 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 score line.
