Stanley bounces back strongly with a win in the Waste Management Phoenix Open – Golf News
After a devastating meltdown at the Farmers Insurance Open last week, Kyle Stanley bounced back to win the Waste Management Phoenix Open at the Tournament Players Club (TPC) Scottsdale, Arizona, held from February 2 to 5, 2012.
The man, who was seen in tears last week because of a horrible loss, was again found in the same condition at TPC Scottsdale.
However, this time, tears were rolling down his face because of joy that he had on Sunday after registering his first ever win on the PGA Tour.
When he entered the course on the final day of the event, Spencer Levin was having an eight-stroke lead over him. However, last week’s history repeated but this time the grief came to Levin’s part.
Stanley fired a bogey-free six-under par 65 to surge at top of the leaderboard with a one-stroke margin over Ben Crane who finished on 66.
“I really feel for him, experiencing that,” Stanley said about Levin, echoing what Brandt Snedeker said about Stanley last week.
“You don't want to wish that upon anybody. He's a very good player. Way too good of a player to not bounce back or recover,” he added.
Stanley looked relieved of what happened to him last week and was not able to control his emotions. He said that he never expected to earn his first PGA Tour victory in such a style.
Moreover, he was happy to do what Robert Garrigus did two years ago, bouncing back from a similar defeat in 2010 St. Jude Classic and winning his first ever PGA Tour event a week later.
“You go from a very low point to a high point,” Stanley said. “I am not sure I expected to maybe recover this quickly. ... I think the biggest challenge was seeing if I could put last week behind me. I think I did”.
Levin started the day with style when he birdied on the opening hole on Sunday.
However, he failed to hold on to it and gradually passed on the lead to Stanley at the end of the round, when he finished on four-over par 75. He finished two strokes behind Stanley.
