Staples Center likely venue for Bernard Hopkins vs. Chad Dawson bout – Boxing news
The current World Boxing Council’s and the Ring Magazine’s Light Heavyweight Champion Bernard Hopkins will do his first defence of the historic title against the Ring Magazine’s number 4 Light Heavyweight boxer in the world Chad Dawson on October 15, 2011
and Staples Center in Los Angeles is most probably going to be the venue.
The promoter of Golden Boy Promotions Richard Schaefer told the media Staples Center is most likely going to be the venue for Hopkins’ first title defence against the former title holder and mandatory challenger Chad Dawson who has won 30 of his 32 professional
fights including 17 by the way of a knockout.
Schaefer said that the venue has almost been confirmed and he is just going through the final steps.
The promoter commented on Staples Center and said Hopkins had a great crowd last time when he did his 20th historic title defence. Schaefer reckons the people of Los Angeles really want to see good fights happening and that is why they have always
been so supportive.
“It does look like it will be at the Staples Center,” Schaefer said. “It's probably 95 percent it will be there. I am just working with them to finalize our deal.”
“We had a great crowd when Bernard did his historic 20th title defense and now he will do his first defense of the historic title he won against (Jean) Pascal,” Schaefer said. “I think Los Angeles boxing fans, Los Angeles sports fans, the celebrities --
I think they like these kind of meaningful events. Staples Center is very excited about it,” he added.
The American pugilist, Hopkins, who has won 52 of his 60 professional fights including 34 by the way of a knockout, secured a unanimous points victory over the Canadian, Jean Pascal on May 21, 2011 and became the oldest boxer ever to win a world title at
the age of 46.
Since this is Hopkins first title defence all eyes will be set to see whether Hopkins will really be able to defend his historic title or not.
