Star Trek Fans, Can You Help Me?

Question

I heard that Eric Fleming who played Mr. Favor on "Rawhide" would have had the starring role in Star Trek if he hadn't died(Eric drowned in 1966 while filming a movie in Peru. He was only 41). I looked all over the net and found only one reference to this which just said it's uncorroborated. Does anybody know? And what was the starring part? I don't know much about Star Trek. Thanks for any help.
