I was going to use 'Betelgeuse' as a name in a book I was making, but then I found out it from the movie "Beetlejuice" (I've never seen)

So any names similar?

thanks.

  1. There are tons of star names out there, and most of them are Arabic, like Betelgeuse (not actually pronounced Beetlejuice).  Here are a few more stars: Rigel, Bellatrix, Mintaka, Vega, Antares, Spica, Polaris, Arctaurus, Deneb, and Mizar.

  2. I suggest you refer to the 3 volume set 'Burnham's Celestial Handbook' (published by Dover); loads of star names and their origins from different cultures (ancient South American, Mesopotamian, Pharonic, Indian and Chinese).

  3. For a HUGE list of star names go to:

  4. Well, there's Bellatrix, which is another star in the constellation of Orion.

  5. Deneb has a cool etymology.

  6. LoL

First, go see Beetlejuice, it was a great movie!  :-)

Second, the star Betelgeuse has been around a lot longer than the movie beetlejuice, and I'm sure it's been used in lots of other literature as well, so you'd probably have no problem using it.

By the way, Betelgeuse is pronounced BET-el-jooze.

Are you just wanting another star name that starts with "B" or are you wanting a star that's a reddish looking M class supergiant (like betelgeuse)?

The star Bellatrix is also in the constellation Orion (where Betelgeuse is located).  Bellatrix means "the female warrior" in Latin and the star is a hot, blue-white B2 class star.

Aldebaran is another red star like Betelgeuse.  It's name means "the follower" in arabic and it's a bright orange, class K5 giant star.

    Hope this helps!  ;-)
