Star player of yesteryears Gene Selznick dies at the age of 82 – Volleyball news
It is heart-rending to learn about the death of American beach volleyball legend Gene Selznick, who breathed his last on Sunday, June 10.
He was 82-year old and suffered from a series of the health issues. Pneumonia has been told as the actual reason of his death. He is survived by his three sons Dane, Bob and Jack.
Gene started playing volleyball at a very young age and made a great player in the US men’s national team, later on. He proved his skills as an outstanding athlete and also shared his knowledge with others in the form a coach. He remained attached with volleyball
for all these years and hugely contributed to the overall growth and success of the sport in America.
He led US men’s national volleyball team in the shoes of captain from 1953 to 1967. He received many accolades as a captain and led his team to many great achievements. Besides indoor volleyball, he also showcased his skills on the beach courts. He settled
for the King of the Beach crown from 1950 to 1966. Furthermore, he won many other competitions on the sands of California.
As far as his coaching career is concerned, he became an accomplished coach of beach volleyball. He coached Misty May-Treanor, Holly McPeak, and Kerri Walsh, who are still staying on top of the game.
On account of his amazing talent and services, he was inducted into the Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1988.
The FIVB Board of Administration member and USA Volleyball CEO Doug Beal regretted the tragic loss of a volleyball legendary personality. He stated, “Volleyball has lost one of the most remarkable performers and personalities in our entire life.”
“He was innovative, creative, stubborn, dogmatic, visionary and enormously influential. His mark on the sport will last for as long as most of us will know, and we have truly lost a significant portion of our history. I cherish the memories of the times
I spent with Gene and know I was one of so many that he touched and influenced in his long tenure in our sport,” he further added.
