Star-studded Maybank Malaysian Open tees off tomorrow – Asian Tour News
The Malaysian Open sponsored by Maybank is all set to tee off from tomorrow at the exquisite, Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club. Many top ranked players who are participating will be eyeing to grab the coveted trophy along with the winner’s cheque. Total
prize money sanctioned for the event is US$ 2.5 million.
Current Masters Champion, Charl Schwartzel, is confident of a repeat performance in this tournament also. The South African who wore the green jacket at Masters is high with confidence, as he hopes to play well in Malaysia. This will certainly be a tough
task for him as the conditions in Asia are entirely different.
This will be the tournaments’ 50th anniversary. It will be a field where top players like Martin Kaymer and Graeme McDowell will be playing. Kaymer is the highest ranked player in this tournament. As being the world number one, there are high
expectations from him to perform well during all the four rounds.
Kaymer also enters this tournament as being one of the favourites to win. The course conditions are already in great shape as Kaymer was impressed with the way the greens-keeper has worked hard on the course.
The Asian charge will be led by Thongchai Jaidee of Thailand. Along with Jaidee, other notable players like young Noh Seung-yul, Indian duo of Jeev Milka Singh and S.S.P. Chowrasia will tee off tomorrow. Anirban Lahiri, who recently won the Panasonic Open,
has high hopes too.
The South African, Schwartzel, became the highest ranked player from his country. He is currently ranked at the 11th spot in the world. Schwarztel claims that his chances of winning another win are on the higher side. The 26-year-old landed in
Kuala Lumpur after a gruelling a long flight from Georgia.
Masters champion on his arrival said, “I think this is the strongest field the Maybank Malaysian Open has had. I’m looking forward to this week. Whenever I enter a golf tournament I try to play my best and see if I can win this one as well. By winning the
Masters, you feel like you can win anything. It gives you a lot of confidence.”
World number one Kaymer, who again missed the cut at Masters, has now set his eyes on winning another title in his career. He will be hoping to improve his record and win the 10th European title of his career. Already, he is pinned as one of the
tournament favourite.
McDowell who also missed the cut at Masters will certainly be hoping for a better performance in this tournament. The 31-year-old Irishman is already charged up before the tournament, as he was hitting it well during his practice round. It will be a challenge
for him as he eyes his seventh European Title.
The four day Asian Tour event co-sanctioned by European Tour will commence from tomorrow. With all these top ranked players featuring, it will be a feast to watch them play on the course.
