Starbucks to close 600 stores nationwide?

They make all the other neighborhood-friendly coffee shops go out of buisness.

Say goodbye to a good hangout place, poetry slams (:]), coffe served in your own mug, and baristas that know your name

Say hello to million-calorie sugar concotions, landfills filled with cardboard and plastic cups, ect.

what kills me  is they built brand new buildings here for their coffee and now they are closing them 8 monthes later i mean

they built like 6 within five miles..are you serious?why would you do that???

People or business's make no sense to me at times.

I think they're using the economic crisis excuse to cut stores....I believe is the inevitable that people with stop buying them 'cause they're somewhat responsible for the hunger and slavery crisis going on on Sudan and other african countries...and people are starting to reach REAL coffee...the one brought down of moutains by mules with good dental coverage...they don't even know what to put in their coffees anymore to attract customers...

My husband and I looked at the list tonight. Before we looked at it, we were able to guess which one near us is being closed. Now I live in Utah, not exactly the coffee-drinking capital of the US, and if I go to the one nearest my house, a ten-minute walk in different directions can take me to two others. If I want to spend that ten minutes driving, I can visit another three or four. There are just too d**n many, and the fact is they are overpriced, and not that great.

My husband has spent a lot of time in Seattle, and there most people seem to prefer Tullys or an independent if they are stopping in for a quickie. There's one in our supermarket, and it's better, in my opinion, and about half the price. Starbucks is overrated and overpriced.

With all that said, there is one thing which bums me out. The economy sucks right now, and they are putting a lot of people out of work. And while they are called "barristas", the truth is that the ones around here are just modern versions of the old-fashioned soda jerk. They know so little about coffee that they will never get a job at a coffee shop which actually employs barristas (here, they have a chart which shows how to make everything--one shot of this, two shots of that, stick a lid on it and hand it over), and they are just going to be out pounding the pavement. That part does bother me. But it's also entirely Starbucks' fault. You can only saturate any market so far before you become redundant. We have more Starbucks in the 5-mile radius around my house than we do of any one fast food place. That's just silly to build that many and then think you're gonna keep floating.
