That's just part of communication course. There is people that can't face other people. A person should be able to do this. The comm course take you in a gradient to gain comm skills in a gradient.

It reminds me a little bit of U.S. Air Force basic training. Only in basic there is no gradient. You better confront, listen and anwser. Is good that I had Scientology training when I joined the  Air Force. I didn't had no problem with having a couple of drill instructors screaming at my face. :-)

I believe what you are talking about  is called 'Auditing',  and it induces a hypnotic  state that allows for gradual brainwashing. You basically hold the e-meter and talk to the auditor.
