Starlin Castro and Matt Garza spark as Chicago Cubs hammer St. Louis Cardinals, 11-4: MLB Update
Chicago Cubs’ short-stop, Starlin Castro, and starter, Matt Garza, both had a notable day as Castro went 4-for-4 and Garza pitched five solid innings in the Cubs’ 11-4-win over the St. Louis Cardinals at the Wrigley Field in Chicago on May 11.
Garza permitted just one run on three hits and gave away three walks. He struck-out seven batters. Garza said of his game, “I used to make fun of guys who made the first and third out and now I'm one of them. It is what it is. I was more than ready to keep
going. They asked me how I felt and I felt good.”
The Cubs’ Manager, Mike Quade, was contended with the way his team performed right through the game. Speaking to reporters, he said, “We needed one of these. We did. I don't care if it took four hours or eight hours. It was good for us, good for me to just
be able to relax.”
The pitchers from both sides threw the ball in good line and length and gave no run to any batter in the first two innings. The third inning was full of score as the Cardinals posted one run in it while the Cubs scored six runs during this inning. Ryan Theriot
added one run for the Cardinals on the sacrifice bunt of Jon Jay.
Castro added three runs in the third inning including triple RBIs hit. He completed his single on the error of Colby Rasmus, who missed to catch the ball cleanly. Castro posted all of his three runs on the errors of the Cardinals’ fielders. Carlos Pena was
the other man who contributed two runs in the Cubs’ 6-1 lead. The score-board remained empty in the fourth inning.
The fifth inning also went in favour of the Cubs as they posted four runs in it to extend their lead to 10-1. Alfonso Soriano and Koyie Hill both singled off the right field to reach at the second and third base, respectively. The other two runs were taken
by Kosuke Fukudome and Darwin Barney towards the centre-field position. The sixth inning also passed away without any run.
During seventh inning, Nick Punto scored three runs for the Cardinals on contribution with Gerald Laird, who singled on the drive of Albert Pujols. On the other side, Marlon Byrd completed a single run to give the Cubs a lead of 11-4. The next two innings
remained empty.
