  1. Scales do a really good job at building up speed, even though they are boring. Finger exercises also help as well.

Check out cyberfret.com for a LOT of stuff to help you from the ground up again. There's a section called Beginner Guitar Lessons under the heading Learn Guitar.

Majority of acoustics use steel strings, so I'd choose those.

  2. First of all, you can put extra light gauge steel string on an acoustic and nylon strings on the classical guitar.

Here are some exercise to do on every string from the 6th string to the 1st and then, start from the 1st down to the 6th.

Use these fingering.....one finger per fret, no exception and alternate pick every notes.

1-2-3-4 on each string all the way to the 1st string.

Then, 4-3-2-1 from the small string to the 6th string.

Then, 4-3-2-1 from the 6th to the 1st and, 1-2-3-4 from the 1st to the 6th.

Do this with these fingerings also.

    1-2-4-3,  1-4-2-3,  1-4-3-2,  2-1-3-4, 2-1-4-3, 2-4-1-3, 2-4-3-1

    1-3-2-4, 1-3-4-2, 3-1-2-4,  3-1-4-2,  4-1-2-3,  4-1-3-2,

    That should get you started,,,,

  3. It would help to know what music or style you are interested in.  There are a lot of good music sites out there with free lessons. (even on youtube if you like a visual.)

I use steel strings on my acoustic. Martin & Dean Markley are pretty good brands for the price. The gauge may depend on the type of music you're playing.  My classical has plastic strings. (Augustine brand)
