Starter Motorcycle?

I wanted to buy a dirt bike to possibly start racing on, or at the very least go trail riding or something. For someone who has ridden a bike a few times and is a beginner rider, what bike would you reccommend?

*I am like 5'7'', so a smaller bike like an 85 wouldnt work.

  1. yamaha ttr-125l are great for trail riding but if you want motocross try a yz model.

  2. Definatley go Honda. The best models to go trail riding is the honda CRF100F I'm 5"9 and I use the older model of this bike, the 2003 XR100R and this bike works great. It goes around 50 mph. on a straight away trail and it is pretty good for climbing and taking off some small jumps.

  3. try the motorcycle section this is for racing question

  4. There is no such thing, unless you want to add ' training wheels'.

For instance, I started on a 500ccc single-banger, brand name " Velocette"  (English, as that's all there was, in those days.)

If you are going to get into trails riding (as opposed to the close yer eyes and rap on the throttle, i.e., moto-cross), then pick something well-balanced, around 250-350 cc or so. Trails riding subtracts points for every time you touch the ground with something other than the tires. It's a very demanding sport, demanding a LOT out of the rider.

Moto-cross? Basically, who has the biggest engine and deepest pockets. <shrug>

I always liked my bikes in the 500-650cc range when I was riding, but that was decades ago.

If you want to have any semblance of a backbone left at age sixty, stay away from the crotch rockets. They will cripple one.
