  1. The motor has two coils. It has a start coil and a run coil.

The Start coil is in series with the capicator.

When the motor is first started, the start capicator and coil is energized.

When the motor is up to speed, the voltage to the start coil and capicator is removed. The motor will still continue to run because of momentum.

The start capicator produces a phase shift in the voltage relative to the other coil. This phase shift causes the rotor of the motor to have two forces upon it and get it up to speed.

Once the motor is up to speed the start coil/cap is not needed. The motor has internal contacts that open when the motor is up to speed. That is what switches the voltage to the start coil/cap. When the motor is stopped or going very slow, those contacts are closed. That turns the start cap/coil on. Note: this only works on an AC motor.
