Ok, so i am entering 9th grade and i have these classes to look forward to:

-Honors Geometry

-Honors Biology

-English

-(AP) Human Geography

-Spanish

-Journalism

-P.E.

For extra-curricular's i am planning on volunteering and getting a job.

Joining a sports team, thats the one i am deeply worried about, you see my school is hyper competitive at sports. Im planning to try out for swimming, basketball, soccer and tennis. i don't even think i have a good chance of getting into them since most people are pretty good.

So my question is, is my Freshman plan good so far? Joining Clubs,Volunteering,Honors Courses

And what if i don't get into any sports team? would that hurt my college app.?

  1. You could also try intramural sports, which exercise the same teamwork attitude.  Try being a manager on a team or taking stats.  I have written several online courses that may help you.

I am a school counselor and have worked with hundreds of students and parents.  The same questions about how to find the right college, plan for college, or exploring careers keep coming up.  I decided to set up some online classes (self paced) to answer many of your questions and activities to help in the process.  My site is located at globalscholar.com and type in my name "Kerrie."

  2. sounds good!

  3. Great plan so far. Be sure to remain committed to whatever activities you choose. Volunteering an hour a week for just freshman year isn't enough - keep it up with several hours a week, throughout high school, and that shows colleges your commitment to whatever you take on.

Don't join so many activities that you can't commit enough to any of them. Keep a few, manageable clubs/activities/courses that you can show dedication, good grades, and good recommendations for.

As for your question on joining sports: no, it isn't necessary to be in a sport, but be sure to show colleges your commitment to the other activities you choose. That's exactly what colleges are looking for.
