Question:

Starting Income level for a IT or Business graduate (B.S. degree)?

I was at Devry about a year ago to ask about their programs. (I was already at University of Redlands as a Junior at the time) and I decided not go to to Devry. (Classes were not one night a week and Colton too far to where I live).

However, Devry had a job board in the back. I'm not sure if all Devrys have this, but it stated that many of their graduates earn 45K in their first year out of college (B.S. Degree in IT or Computer Science).

I am at University of Redlands School of Business with an emphasis in Informations Systems. Right now, I'm in a database management/spacial analysis class. Next is our programming course in VB.NET I also have a Mang of IT class and then my Project Management Capstone class.

I have no real word expereince in IT or in Project Management. I desire a part-time AM shift job (perferably near or in Perris) in IT or Project Management.

I do NOT want to work in retail as a cashier or flip burgers at a fast food place. This is my entire reason for going to college to get a degree in Business-----> So I wont HAVE TO be a cashier at Wal-Mart.

What can I expect to be paid yearly (beginning wage) as a person with a B.S. degree from 1. a college such as University of Redlands and 2. With no real world expereince?

I went to this website:

http://www.jobster.com/outreach/careers/Pacific-Shore-Resources/jobDetails?hbxcmp=&hbxsrc=&i=BQIHt2rJwg==&i=BQIHt2rJwg==&opportunity=83984971

and as you can see, this employer wants someone with 5 years experience in IT. If you scroll down, you will see that they want a min of 5 years exp AND a B.S. degree in either IT or in Business. It states that this job in Riverside pays $90K-$100K a year.

Now, I believe this is a great amount of money for someone with a B.S. degree. I think this would be more appropiate for the person with a masters degree, but that is just me.

Can I logically expect to receive (and would it be right or ethical for me to ****ask**** for this much) $40 K my first year out of college with a B.S. Degree in Business with an emphasis in Information Systems? Is this too much? Is this too little? Should I not ask for any specific amount and ask for a range? What should this range be?

I can see myself not having many money problems in my future (2 years ) but I'm not sure what to ask for when I go to industry specific websites to look for work. I don't want to look like a fool asking for $25K as a person hoping to become a Project Manager.

It would help me greatly if 1. Those of you answering this are actually working in the IT field or in Project Management------ and it would be a bonus if you worked in either of those two 2. in Riverside County Ca, so I know what the current wage is for this area. I notice that California usually has a higher wage base since the cost of living here is (also) higher as compared with the rest of the nation.

thank you so much!

  1. Are you going to be certified in anything?  Microsoft etc.....

    The going rate for new employees in the IT field should be in the $36,000 to $40,000 range!  The more you are certified to do the higher the pay and likewise the more experience your pay should increase quick too!

    IT is a great field to be going into right now!

  2. I suggest that you should chat with hiring managers or recruiters to know the fact. As far as I know, Jobirn.com has this function. Moreover, it is the networking jobsite. Good luck!
