  1. Learn breakfalls first, even if you think you're tough enough to take the fall

You'll be glad you took the time to learn how to fall right later on as you progress and people start tossing you around for real

And take your time learning; the more time you take to learn your first few throws correctly, the better understanding you will have for the art, and the better your skills will be in the future (I believe this is true for most martial arts)

If you just rush into fighting, you'll end up with sloppy technique that you'll have to fix later

  2. Sure, when you fall make sure your chin is tucked in and keep from hitting your head.

Combat SAMBO, which I study is a relative of Judo and a lot of fun.  Get flexible, in your back, neck, wrists, shoulders, roll with the fun of it.

Judo is about rolling, so just roll with it and enjoy

  3. work on your breakfalls, remember to use your legs and keep your back straight for over the hip throws. its important to use your legs to lift and not your back. try to listen to everything your teacher says or you may pick up bad habits that are hard to break.

  4. Listen to your teacher.  As for anything to do before class, stretch, stretch and stretch again.  Get a yoga DVD and see if it can help you loosen up.   Also, go to YouTube and search on Judo.  Just watch, WITHOUT TRYING ANY MOVES.  Just watch and take it in.
