  1. Most college towns have some kind of martial arts schools in them.  Find a muay thai school that's close and wach a class of the high-ranking students.  If they look like what you want to be, ask if you can take one class before you commit to joining the gym...the free class is common practice.  Once you find a gym/school you like, start training.  Sounds like you already understand the principles of athletic training...apply that to Muay Thai.

It's really like the progression of swimming...you start off with basic strokes (strikes and defense) and build your fundamentals.  Then you add in more advanced strikes, combinations, clinching,  and other techniques.  Drill every technique until you have it down pat.  Eventually technique becomes ingraned in muscle memory, just like swimming; turning, breathing, speed of stroke, etc.  Over time you'll develop the timing you need to do these things proficiently.

Muay Thai is a great place to start.  If you find a good instructor, I think you'll love it.
