My brother and I are thinking of starting up a lawn care and general handyman services company. Anybody have knowledge about it? Do I need a lic. or can that be avoided by getting paid a certain amount? And what's a good or reasonable amount to charge people in and around Riverside, CA? the same applies to the handy man side. thanks for the answers.

  1. My husband and I started a lawn service in Florida as a second job, and it actually ended up making us more money than our first jobs.  I really do suggest getting a business license.  You can just go down to your local city hall and apply for one.  They are usually never more than $40.  Also, you will need some liability insurance.  I know, i know, it sucks having to get it, but TONS of people will not use your service unless you have it.  Think about it, what if you accidently throw a rock into a window with your mower?  And if you decide to do commercial accounts, they will almost always ask for proof of insurance.

It does seem like a lot of hoops to jump through, but believe me, it will end up paying for itself in the long run.  As far as pricing, it really depends on the size of the lawn and it if needs weed eating too.  We would charge anywhere from $25 to $35 a week for a standard size lawn at a residence.  We also mowed apartment complexes and charged $100 per week.  In the long run, we ended up quitting our regular jobs and went to lawn care full time.  It really, really paid off.  Good luck!
