Question:

Starting a dariy farm?

I was wondering how much it would cost for me to start a dairy farm in Omemee, Ontario, Canada. I need to know of all costs for things like equipment, and cattle, as well as silos. I also need to know how many acres I need and where to get funding. Any ideas?

  1. Your best bet would probably be to go to a Dairy and talk to someone there. I know cattle can be very expensive. How many acres you need depends on the amount of cattle you have. Are you going to corral them or pasture them, or both? You should go to a farm equipment auction in your area to find good used equipment to start out with. Maybe a Farmers Bank would know what direction to point you in and they would be willing to help you, because they could also try to get you a loan to get started.

  2. first you need to decide how big dairy farm you want

  3. didn't you ask this one yesterday? or is there a class happening and you all have the same quiz?

Anyway, there are many factors in startups. Time of year can affect market prices, and other costs. Land you have to work with  and how much feed you can grow yourself, or will you have to buy it. Do you want to be organic certified? Will you have any enterprise products or are you only going to be a producer of milk? will you join a co-op?

Many questions. The local univeristies, even in Canada have extension programs and a lot of information on costs and needs. There will also be dairy associations that you can connect with

  4. Do you plan to be a herdsman and buy all your feed?  Or raise your feed?  How many cows?  You can't even begin to start figuring costs until you know how many cows you plan to run.  A grade A dairy barn will run you $70 - 80 grand.  What type of milking system?  A double 4 herringbone system?  A double 4 can run up to 40 cows with one person.  Over 40 you need some help. A double six?  Do you even know what that is?  Get yourself some info and then ask an intelligent question.

Get yourself a job working at a dairy farm and you'll get a better idea of what is required.  This isn't something you can learn from a book much less from Yahoo Answers!!!

  5. find a dairy farmer in your area and talk to him
