I'm 19 and living in England. I'm moving to Dublin in September 08 for my placement year. I'll be working at the Penney's offices on Mary Street in Dublin 1. I've never been to Dublin before, and have no idea of the areas. If anyone has any help it would be much appreciated. Income will be around 16,000 euros, not sure how much rent is there. Thanks!

  1. That is a low income for living in dublin... Dublin 1 is right in the centre, and rent can be really high no matter where you are living-even for students. have  a look on www.daft.ie and check out places to rent near there, im sure you will find somewhere to share under 500 a month  --(http://daft.ie/searchsharing.daft?s%5Bcc...

you can always live outside the city and travel in each day have a look on the luas website and you can see where that travels from www.luas.ie.

  2. you will need to share on those wages. They (they being a financial advisor guy i know lol) say take about a third of your wages for rent, so that leaves you with about €440 for rent. This way you have a good portion of your money left for other things.

some good websites are daft.ie and let.ie. There is one for sharing gumtree.ie , but ive never used it so dont know if its any good.

south area is generally nicer but more expensive. I dont know all the areas but rathmines and rathgar are nice. My sister lived in drumcondra which is north side, she said it was nice and cheaper than southside.

like i said theres lots of other areas but i dont know a lot about them, so hopefully someone else has more info on those

  3. Mary St is extremely central, so it won't really matter where you live because you will  be able to get in to the city no problem.  A wage of €16,000 is not much - the minimum wage is €8.65  per hour(I think), so if you work a 40 hour week that rate is below the min wage. Penny's must be giving you other benefits, (or at least I hope they are).

Monthly rent can cost from €400 up, to about €700 per month)

On wages like that you would need to share accommodation.  check out www.daft.ie or www.myhome.ie for places to stay.  Most areas will be grand (try avoid north inner city).
