Starting a pool league with friends......?

we will have other couples join with us and rotatate between the two houses with tables, we will have a theme for each night and everyone will bring a food or drink to go along with it - so we have that all planned out. But when it comes to scoring and keeping track what should we do? It will be married couples as teams of two- so I'm thinking just playing doubles each time and just mark who wins each game and giving points for that, then extra points for 8-ball breaks and table runs, minus points for lack of theme support......then just total up all points at the end of the season and see who wins?????? Does that sound good for scoring...am I missing anything? The score sheets I looked up online look to be for single players only and are kind of confusing. We are having a trophy made also, that you will be able to add plaques to each season, for the winners to take home till next season, and possibly a "Banquet" at the end also.

  1. That's a helluva good idea. Sounds like you have it worked out pretty well too. Are you gonna play 8 ball? You might want to try alternate shot. You shoot and then your partner shoots right after you, as long as you keep making balls you keep taking turns. That might be better than regular partners where one person keeps shooting until they miss. It would give everybody more shooting time and less waiting. Just an idea. It would work well in 9 ball too. You can keep the scoring really simple like , 5 points for a win , an extra 2 points for a table run and 1 extra for an 8 ball break. Then say after 8 weeks of play the top 2 or 4 teams have a playoff to see who gets the trophy. I think the theme thing is really cool too but I'm not sure about negative points. Something like that could actually cause a problem between friends and nobody wants that. If you get this going send me an E mail and let me know how it's working out. Good luck to ya!

  2. You have a great idea. Maybe you would be interested in something a little more organized. The APA Amateur Pool League has over 250,000 active members in the United States, Canada, and now Japan. There is probably a league near you too. Try this link and I'm confident you'll be happy with the people you meet playing pool. http://www.poolplayers.com/Locator/defau...

  3. Sounds very nice and social. Yeah the points thing sounds good. Any way will be ok since its just for fun afterall. If you want more ideas look up some official League and Billiards sites on here. Just type Billiard Leagues or something like that into your browser. They will give you ideas of point and ranking systems. You can probably download some score sheets etc. Good luck and have fun.

  4. Sounds like fun. I would do a round robin every week, where every team plays every other team. Just keep track of everyone's win/loss record like any other sport. Decide ahead of time how many weeks will be in each "season." If there are more than 6 teams or so, you could have a playoff for the top 4 teams at the end of the season to determine the champion.

I would keep a running track of 8 on the break and break and runs, but would not factor them into standings. Then you could have seperate prizes for the leaders in each of those categories at the end of the season. You could also have everyone vote the last week for who was the most creative and enthusiastic about adhering to the themes.

    Good luck and have fun.

  5. What a great idea.  I agree with the other answer who suggested joining the APA (or CPA in Canada).  You can form your own team and play in an organized league and it is so much fun.  Just find another couple of people and you will have your own team.  Who knows, you may end up winning a trip to Vegas to play in the National championship!
