How do you start a home aquarium? One with an Axolotl. I've heard collectors have about 5 tanks with all sorts of different marine creatures in.

  1. there is so much info that needs to be said

i would start of with reading axolotl.org it is a very good website

    please do lots of research

they make great pets i cared for well.

i hand feed mine with frozen axolotl food available at your local pet shop

  2. hi and i would love to help you! =]

    1) you need 2" of gravel from the bottom, sloping from the back of the tank to the front, so the waste collects at the front.

    2) an air line to go into your tank, for Oxygen.

    3) you need a filter to hang on the glass, unless it it has and undergravel filter

    4) you need ornaments so fish and hide behind them

    5) you need real aquatic plants

    6) you need water dechlorinator

    7) THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IS WHEN YOU HAVE DONE THIS, LEAVE YOU TANK RUNING FOR 2 WEEKS FOR THE 'CYCLE OF AMONIA, NITRITE, NITRATE, AND OTHER CHEMICALS TO GO ROUND'

    8) I WOULD GET 1 ONION SNAIL TO KEEP IT CLEAN, BUT MAKE SURE ITS NOT CARYING ANY EGGS, OR YOU WILL END UP WITH PEST SNAILS! =]

  3. Wow starting an aquarium... There's heaps to be said about it but 1st things 1st. Go into your local fish shop or a good pet shop and buy a tank at least 2 foot for one axolotl. You then need a filter to filter out the water and put air in it, gravel, ornaments and /or plants for the axolotl to hide and swim though and water conditioner (to get rid of chlorine out of the water). Talk to the pet shop ppl about exactly what you want it for and they can give you some tips too.

Get all this home and give everything a really really good wash out with tap water and then salt water. This will get rid of any germs ect. Set up the tank with all the filters, gravel etc and add your tap water and add a few drops of your water conditioner (make sure you read the label and follow directions). Leave its for a couple of days then check if your tank is all running well and clear and take some water (from the tank) to your local fish shop and they can do a ph and nitrite test to make sure the waters all ok. You can purchase these tests kits yourself too. If water is murky or the wrong ph, you will have to add chemicals to help out your tank.

After you tank is all set up and water is good add your axolotl and feed him. Axolotls are cold water so you shouldn't need a heater unless you live somewhere really cold. Also you will probably need to do a 1/4 water change once every 2 weeks and give the filter a quick clean out as axolotls are pretty messy.

Apart from that just enjoy you new tank and your new pet.

There are heaps of site about setting up tanks and about axolotls so check them out through a search engine.
