Question:

Starting baby on solids?

When starting a baby on rice cereal, must it be given every day? Is it fine to skip a day or two? My 5 month old doesn't like rice cereal and sometimes refuses it. Sometimes he will eat it and sometimes he won't. Of course I don't force him to eat it, so he will eat it one day, and then go several days where he doesn't want anything to do with it...Any suggestions? Will it make him more prone to develop an allergy if he doesn't have it every day?

  1. It's ok to skip a day or so.

I started my son on rice cereal at 5 months(and yes, it is OK to start this young as long as they seem ready)He didn't like it that much.Beech nut makes many different varieties of food that you might want to check out.

  2. OMG honey is very dangerous for babies! They can die!!!!! Do not listen to that other poster!!!!!!

    Good baby feeding info here:

  3. My daughter went threw the same phase. What I did was I started out using it every other day..I use 2 put a lil honey in it 2 make it sweet just like reg. baby formula and give it 2 her that way..once she begun  2 drink the whole bottle i began giving it 2 her everyday w/ honey 4 a week and then stop using the honey...I don't think your son will develop an allergy but try and be creative and SMART about finding alternatives to help him get on the right track. You will find that tool very useful as your son gets older. Good Luck! :-)

P.S. You can also search the web and look at on line baby journals to give you some hints in which direction you should go. But keep in mind 2 things. 1) Always follow your motherly instinct 2) Never believe everything you hear or say

  4. I just started my 16 week old on rice and #1 Gerber foods this week.  I have only been doing it every other day as she is breastfed and gets most of her nutrients from her milk.  Its not so much that your baby is refusing or does not want it.   It will take him a few more feeds to get used to new flavors and textures.  And no, your baby will not develop an allergy to it cos he skips a few days without eating it.

*** Never give honey to a baby under the age of one.  EVER.  Botulism risk***

  5. at this point it doesnt really matter. Infants shouls not be started on ceral until 6 months of age. However all their nutrients SHOULD still be coming from formula or breastmilk until age one. you should continue to offer your baby solids at least once a day so they get used to them or you could end up with a 10 month old who wont eat anything but boob. aka- my daughter
