So, I'm starting my own business..well trying to start my own business selling custom children's bedding using my own designs. I am trying to figure out my production costs...I need to hire an artist to design my pattern for my custom fabric. I don't have very little to no money to pay a designer so I was thinking about hiring some students at Savannah College of Art and Design in exchange for some college credit (if tha'ts at all possible) or a small design fee. My question is..

IF I have to...How much should I expect to pay or offer these students.

  1. It depends...

    look for these things,

    1. how much experience they have

    2. how much education

    3. effort

If you like a student then hire them. Over a couple of weeks see how they do. If they are putting alot of effort in their job then pay more. If not enough effort is shown then either pay less or fire them.

Design is also something. If you don't like their designs then fire them.

    Remember! Give them a chance!

  2. I'm in Canada (West Coast), my company has hired graphic design interns for specific projects/periods of time - range was $13 to 17 per hour.  I think you'll have a hard time getting someone to do it for free.  Your best bet might be to post on the College bulletin board (presuming they have one) and advertising the job at a specific price (list your minimum qualifications - 2nd yr student, look at their portfolio, etc.).  If you're talking about one pattern - I'd say you're looking at a minimum $500.
