Question:

Starting over again?

I'm about to graduate college with a B.S. in Business Marketing and am looking for answers on relocating. I moved once, to a city I thought I'd enjoy but later discovered it wasn't for me. My only hesitation is the thought of failure, moving back home and picking up the pieces yet again. After my first move I came back home and quickly got through school and am now at the crossroad of the same decision I had once before. I'm young (23), educated and am looking to start my journey. My experience has opened a lot of doors and I've had offers to relocate to various parts of the county and state (CA). With income aside, my question: Have you relocated? Why did you? a Job? Love? A new start? Where did you go? Pro's and Cons? Thanks!

  1. wow, sounds like quite a journey so far..let me tell you about my situation so far...I grew up in Detroit Michigan..but knew that once I graduated from high school I was going to move to Southern California..and that is exactly what I did. It was pretty difficult at first but I did it for about 5 years. Then my Mom got diagnosed with a brain aneurism and I decided to move back to Michigan, which at that time I was recently married and in the middle of college. I packed up moved across the country and absolutely hated it...going back home isn't all it is cracked up to be...stayed for about three months..until my Mom was okay and my Husband and I...and our four cats traveled back across the country to California where we have been for almost two years...started over again....lol..but its all worth it to be where you want to be...and it doesn't hurt to try things and if you dont like them try something else....dont be afraid to try new places...test the water....its great you are done with school and reading to take life my the handles......good luck...follow your heart......

  2. I have had the good fortune to live all over this country. I find that each city I have lived in offers its own unique flavor.

    Each person has their own idea of a way of life that only they will know. Meeting someone to share your life, finding a job you enjoy, or just making a living that enables you to be who you want to be is all part of the mystery.

    I would only consider a move for a job if and only if I knew I really wanted that job. You can work anywhere if you have the right attitude. Moving to be miserable just to make money isn't part of my make-up. For some I guess it's ok it's just not me.

    When I go 'home' I find that as they say you really can't. Everyone I knew has moved on with their life. When I go back I always feel kind of nostalgic for the old times but I'm not that same person either. You can't expect them to be either. The town has changed, my friends have kids, and just simple things like jobs get in the way of how it is when you get older.

    Of course this is a two edged sword because when they come down to see me it's the same only reversed.

    You aren't going to make a bad decision at 23. Even if it doesn't work out, barring health issues, you have plenty of time to redirect your life.

    I wish you the best on your journey it's about to finally start. Remember no matter what happens there are always points in everyones life that they wish they would have taken the other road. It's always easy for someone to say I told you so by looking backward. It's the special people that can always move forward against adversity that are the true winners here.

  3. Hi Brooke;

      All my life I have lived in different parts of the United States, from New York To California. One thing I have found out is that all places have their advantages and disadvantages.

      What I have learned is that each and every place is going to be how you make it. You can make them "all" good places simply by making friends with your neighbors and being a good neighbor to them.

      Make an effort to meet and befriend everyone on your block. If you do that one simple thing you will find them coming over for visits and letting you in on all of the good and bad around you. They were already there, so they know the ins and outs. The grass is greener on the other side, if you make it that way.....

      In the mean time, put that marketing degree to work and check out my review and blog. You may not have to move afterall.....

    Best Wishes,

    Ray
