Starting problems 72 Mustang?

302/c4..This is my neighbors vehicle and he's trying to figure out a starting issue. Intermittently, the car will continue to crank after trying to start or the starter won't disengage after the vehicle has started and he has to hurry & disconnect the battery cables.

So far he's replaced the key ignition switch, solenoid, regulator, connected an extra ground cable, but to no avail.

Also, he has the battery mounted in the truck with a 2 gauge positive battery cable running up the the solenoid. I was thinking maybe he should replace the starter itself or the steering column ignition switch?

The Mustang starts and runs great, except for this problem. It will occur randomly.....about once a week. I've never encountered a problem like this with my chevy's, so I wasn't much help. Thanks in advance and I will pass your answers/suggestions along to him.

  1. Since everything else has been changed, it has to be the starter. The shaft is probably worn and sticks when it engages the flywheel.


  2. Check to make sure that the starter is sitting flush against the bell housing.  If it isn't the starter drive gear may be binding with the ring gear on the flexplate occasionally, causing it to stay engaged once the engine fires.

  3. put in new starter..the bendix drive gear /spring is sticking....it will chew up the flywheel if you dont fix it.

  4. dose it have a remote stating solenoid it may have got water in and is jamming . the bearing in the starter is it worn is the starter shaft bent is the bendix bent its the gear with a clutch pack that's all of possibles now next step is to undo  starter bolts and get a s***w diver and lever starter motor away from the block and holding it away tighten bolts its a old trick with starters that don't engage ring gears correctly give last a hit first as its the easiest  of the lot to try  oh it may be a ring gear problem if you take out starter check ring gears teeth all the way around

  5. Hit your starter  with a hammer it proply has a stick point, hit it to lossen it up

  6. This is usually caused by a starter that's drawing too many amps. This would be a great time to make a very good and beneficial upgrade to the late model high torque starters (93 Mustang 5.0). The high torque starters are much smaller and spin the motor over much easier. The starter relay on the fender will need to be replaced and the battery cable to the new starter solenoid will need to be installed on the battery side of the relay. A new wire will need to be ran from the starter cable side of the relay down to the small terminal on the starter so that when the ignition is turned to start it will send power to starter solenoid and engage the starter.   7. The problem is with the solenoid sold by most parts stores. They're cheap quality and don't work well. To prove just whack the solenoid with a wrench the next time it continues to crank. To get rid of the problem go to    http://texasmustang.com      and buy a Motorcraft solenoid. They're built for Ford to Ford's specs and are a quality part. I've had this same problem more times than I care to think about. The Motorcraft solenoid is the sure solution.
