Starting to make my baby registry, help?

What are some "must have" items that may not be obvious to a first time mom?

Also what are good items that people will feel comfortable buying for a shower? I realize the majority of the "big" things (high chair, car seat, stroller, etc.) will have to be bought by myself.

  1. Honestly, register for EVERYTHING!!!! I registered for my swing, bouncer, glider, crib, changing table, bottles, boppy, clothing (stay away from newborn and head for the 0-3 month and up) blankets, mobile, stroller and carseat, pack n play, and giftcards.  We didnt get everything obviously, but we got over $600 in giftcards, mainly to purchase the big items, because people didnt want to carry them to our baby shower.  Also dont forget to register for giftcards!!!  Also, dont register for a highchair, instead register for a booster seat.  They take up way less room and serve the same purpose.  Have fun!

  2. go to like babies r us and click on the registry... it will tell you everything you will possibly need.. trust me i was askin the same question.. it breaks it down for you.

  3. Put those on the registry anyway.  Also remember the small stuff like diapers... and bathing accessories... and onesies... fingernail clippers... nursing pillow

  4. Register for everything you want. I have done two baby showers and they got all of the big stuff at the baby shower. Invite everyone even if you think they might not come. You may be surprised how many show up. Some people can go in on a big gift together. I have found that co-ed baby showers work very well. But go with whatever you are comfortable with. I would also register for more than one size of baby clothing, babies grow fast and don't wear the newborn stuff for long. register for several sizes of diapers and wipes. Those always come in handy. I'm also about to be a first time mom as well so I may have missed something when I registered as well. Make a list of all the things you want and need. Cross things off as you receive them. Get everything set up and organized so it is all easy to get to or find. Then all you need to do is take care of your little bundle of joy. If you find you have forgoten something, well that's what friends are for lol. Send one of them out or use that excuse to show off your little one. Good luck and congrat.

  5. Wraps, baby blankets, bibs, clothing, baby bath, nappies (a great present), socks or booties, hats, singlets, a lamp, cot and basinet sheets, hooded towells, baby toys, bath cloths, pictures for the room, baby wash, music CD etc etc. Best of luck

  6. Add in the "big" things, because not only may people decide to chip in for them, but most stores offer a 10 - 15% discount off any items left on your registry that don't get purchased. So if you need to buy them for yourself later, you will receive the additional discount. One thing no one has mentioned is a good thermometer, like the ear or forehead-swipe versions which give you an immediate and accurate reading.

Also, this item may seem minor but there is a brilliant type of diaper rash ointment which I found indispensable. It's called Triple Paste and it is much thicker and lasts much longer than some of those cheaper brands...it just protects their delicate skin soooo much better!  When I had my son he had terrible diaper rashes and I had to order it through the pharmacy, but I know that most places carry it now (Target and Walgreens, for sure) . It is expensive, so worth registering for but even if you don't, I recommend you at least buy it yourself. I hope your pregnancy goes well!

  7. A Boppy!! Can't live without one of those! (and an extra cover!)

flannel burp clothes are really good to have on hand.

Extra crib sheets and changing pad covers

    a sling or front carrier

a play mat (that think they lay on with lights and sounds)

    socks

  8. Crib mattress, sheets, sheet "savers"

    Changing pad and extra covers

    Baby wipes + diapers

    Swing

    Bouncer

Lots of newborn onesies, t-shirts, pants and socks

Clothing for 3-6 months, too... newborns can outgrow their newbie clothes rather quickly!

  9. I disagree with other people-- I wouldn't put diapers or any type of "normal" supplies on your registry because people love getting the cute little gift sets.  My husband and I received 4 Johnson and Johnson bath sets alone, and I have more newborn and size 1 diapers then I know what to do with.  Also, don't register for clothing or blankets--again, people LOVE shopping for those things because they're cute and/or soft, so I wouldn't put them down.  But, you might want to add receiving blankets on there.

Instead of using the Babies R Us guide for your registry, try logging on to whattoexpect.com and bringing up theres.  Babies R Us's guide recommends overbuying because, let's face it, they're trying to sell you stuff.

Our baby isn't here quite yet (5.5 more weeks!), but my husband and I have been taking care of our neighbors newborn and using some of our baby's supplies that we got at the shower.  The two things I love?  1) bottle warmer.  I recommend Phillips IQ.  2) Electronic Bottle Sterilizer.  This thing is great!  It steam sterilizes in 6 minutes and will keep it sterilized up to 24 hrs.  It's kind of expensive, but it will sterilize bottles, breast pump parts, pacifiers...you name it!

People will buy you expensive items, so go ahead and register for them along with the cheaper stuff.  Remember to register for extra crib sheets and changing table pads.  If you are having a little girl, you might want to pick out a little package of headbands or hair bows.  Don't forget a tub, hooded towels, and washcloths as well as safety items (outlet plugs, ect).  Also, think ahead!  Register for little snack cups and spoons that you will need in the near future.

    Hope this helps!

  10. when i register i will put everything,i just answered one of ur other questions.lol. but theres no harm in putting everything u want.

  11. Don't assume big items will have to be bought by you, people may go in together and get them for you.  Go ahead and put them on the registry, if you don't get them, you're not out anything, but you might be surprised.  Try to put a variety of priced items on the registry-everything from washcloths to travel systems.  Don't forget the care items like shampoo, nail clippers, baby oil, baby lotion, that kind of thing.

  12. I'm a first time mom to and i put a dipper bag, sleepers, humidifier, bath tub, diaper can, snugli, bumpers for crib, dippers, all in one child care kit,

body suits, hat mitts and booties, bottles, blankets and stuff like that i did put some bigger items on there just so people didnt think all i wanted help with was the small things

  13. Well definitely scan the type of diapers you want to use. That way you don't get a million different kinds. Changing can give your little one a rash.

    bottles

    monitor

    blankets

    decor

    storage

the essentials like nail clippers and a baby thermometer.

    stuff like that. =]
