I needed to add this: You've had some fine horns in your day and I am very pleased to see that you are starting back, congratulations. Your wind and 'chops' will not be what they were at first, but all things in good time, right? There are many fine vintage horns, and new horns that are viable as beginner to lifers applicable to your experience. I do not believe the Super 20 trumpet would be best, but not unreasonable either. I must disagree with the Ambassador being given short shrift, as it was built to the same standards as the full FE Olds line, and was designed by a noted mentor of trumpet designers himself, Mr. Reynolds. It is a chosen backup horn for many pros. However, I am digressing. A small bore trumpet of a New York Bach quality would seem fitting for you. There are many conns that fit the bill, excepting that their voice would not equal boston horns such as the Georges Model of the Vega which is unequalled by few horns. As to mouthpieces, it is fairly regular practice to use wide rims for older and/or comeback players. There are many Holton and Muck cushion-rims to satisfy the need. BTW, a field horn change might be suggested for your son for obvious reasons of both projection, tone and salvation of your 20.
Again, please get in touch if you wish. I'm well into my retirement and love the hobby of horns...even if Im only capable of of the piano at this point. Best to you.

Frankly, your horn is not considered a beginners horn as it is looser in slotting. That being said, your son's director is either an elitest an idiot or both. You have a horn that could have taken your son through college and beyond. A fine horn. For you I suggest that you can get in touch with me and I can hook you up with the 'professional beginners horn', the Ambassador, or a number of other starter trumpets (or cornets are a wise choice as well for 'seasoned tastes'). I am an old timer with a passion for horns. Frankly, the cost for getting 'back' with both a fine cornet and trumpet (used but as good as new) is far less than half the cost of that Bach. I collect both King and Olds horns and do trades as well. If interested, ww2navyman@hotmail.com
