Question:

Starting your own last name?

Me & my husband are interested in having our 'own last name', basically starting our own Family tree. Basically, to make it more simple, I won't have his last name, or mine & he won't have his last name.

I know that you can do it, but how would I go about doing that? Any help is GREATLY appriciated!

  1. As long as it is not done with intent for fraud, you can legally change your name and choose. It is a matter of filing papers with a court (here in the US).

Just an observation, from someone doing research, it will make it very difficult for your historical ancestry, and would kind of "disconnect" them from that.  People use the term 'family tree' in several ways... it can be thought of from a husband/wife and down to their descendants.  In that sense, you will have your own "tree", regardless of what name is used.  I think more traditionally/ standard that the family tree works BACK to ALL the ancestors who were your history. You come from one; your husband comes from one.. your children will blend the two and come from both sides.

Just friendly feedback, from what I do.

  2. This isn't advice but just my opinion. You are one lucky girl who I envy very much. It sounds like you have quite a wonderful, loving husband. A man who doesn't demand his wife take his last name is a winner in my book. I wish more men were like your husband. Does he have a brother?
