startled at the stillness broken by reply so aptly spoken

doubtless said i what it utters is its stock and store

caught from some unhappy master, whom unmerciful disaster

followed fast and followed faster till his songs one burden bore; till the dirges of his hope the melancholy burden bore-

of never- nevermore

i dont understand what this stanza means

  1. Poe is stating his disbeleif that the bird could really be talking to him - and yet it's words fit so perfectly with his situation

  2. 1) Startled....  The narrator is started that the Raven breaks the stillness of the room with a reply that seems to fit perfectly with this thoughts

    2)  ... Stock & store...  The narrator tells himself that the word "Nevermore", while seemingly very profound, is probably the only word the Raven knows.  He then goes on saying that the reason "Nevermore" is the only word Raven knows is because it has born too many melancholy burdens, unhappy masters, and disasters in its life.  No doubt, reminding the narrator of his own life.
