State Ranking Badminton Tournament: Sankeerth proves his class in Boy’s Singles quarter-final round
The young Indian shuttler Sankeerth B R cleared quarter-final round of Boy’s Singles Under-17 category by ousting Madusudan M in Udupi 5 Star State Ranking Badminton Tournament on July 10, 2012.
Though, this battle was resolved in just two games but still both contenders gave each other a tough time while piling up final figures of 24-22 and 21-17.
Local badminton court of Udupi, India was jam-packed as this quarter-final tussle attracted a reasonable number of people who remained glued to their chairs until final moments of the battle.
The victorious campaigner sealed a straight-set win and qualified for the semi-final round where he will be up against compatriot shuttler Daniel Farid S.
However, the losing shuttler did not surrender tamely rather he stood full to his stature throughout this hard fought tussle.
The opening game set the overall tempo of the match as both shuttlers played their heart out to pocket the first match point.
In first half, Sankeerth gained an immediate advantage with three points in a row but he could not turn this initial lead into a distinctive margin until mid-game break.
He finished the first half with a tight result of 11-10 and provided his rival a golden opportunity to bounce back.
After the interval, Madusudan made swift progress to 14-12 and strengthened his grip with 18-15 in the third quarter of the set.
Sankeerth, who is also ranked three in this tournament, showed strong character in this critical phase and caught his challenger at 18-18 score position.
Both compatriot shuttlers played three game points and finally Sankeerth finished this race with a tight yet decisive total of 24-22.
The second set of the match also proved to be a very competitive contest as at one stage Madusudan was in strong position to avoid a woeful exit but then his competitor cast him out with a gutsy performance.
Though, Sankeerth looked confused in the start but he gained confidence immediately after half time and ruled in all areas of the court.
He kept trailing behind until 11-7 but a few back-to-back points in the third quarter of the set took him to authoritative position of 16-15.
He pocketed five out of ending seven points and stamped his supremacy with a notable figure of 21-17.
