State of Maharashtra looking to develop Formula 1 circuit in Mumbai – Formula 1 news
A group headed by Capita Symonds and Populous is looking to plan a Formula 1 circuit in Mumbai.
The first ever Grand Prix event on Indian soil is going to be held on Sunday, October 30, 2011 at Noida, New Delhi. India is acknowledging interest in the sport in the country and its growing popularity. The Maharashtra state Road Development Corporation
(MSRDC) has set up a consortium to investigate the possibility of a circuit in Mumbai.
Capita Symonds and Populous who have sent their proposals for the London 2012 Olympic Stadium and Olympic Park, are heading the consortium. DIMTS team with the help of Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and Federation International de Motocyclisme
(FIM) along with Capita Symonds and Populous are going to work out all of the aspects of the scheme and make sure that the licensing and regulatory requirements of national and International motorsport for two and four wheels are met. They will also be identifying
the potential location and the associated development in Mumbai and the surroundings of the city.
Director of Capita Symonds’ Business development Jerry Muscroft talked about what they aim to achieve through this major project.
He said, “Our appointment reflects the consortium's growing strength in master-planning, transportation and design of some of the world's leading motor racing circuits and regeneration projects.”
“The consortium understands how large sporting projects can be 'Urban Generators' that enhance and encourage development. We will lead the way with sports master-planning and sports community generation,” he added.
He further said, “We are committed to delivering the next generation of racing circuits, with great racing, over-taking, world class facilities and architecture; but above all the intention is to create a sustainable venue that will not need continuous financial
support, and will facilitate investment and re-generation.”
The news is a welcome sign for the growth of Formula 1 in India and overall, which has been one of the main aspects of the last couple of years. Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone has been very optimistic about the prospects of the sport in India, and a circuit
development plan in Mumbai will be a welcome news for the sport and for fans all around.
