State of Maine in turmoil regarding opening of more casinos – Horseracing news
The state of Maine is presently in turmoil and confusion regarding a plan that advocates the operation of more casinos and racinos in the region.
The legislative body of the state is being called upon by proponents of the plan to legalize the motion so that they could start off with the construction of the casinos and racinos.
However, there is a big group of people that does not support the idea to legalize the plan and their reasons seem legitimate.
In case the plan is given the authenticity of being legal under the law, it is expected that Maine will see a drastic increase in the number of gaming companies operating in the region. So much so that this number could reach a double of what it is currently
in a short span of a year.
Other than that, the approval of the plan would be a change from the way such gaming proposals have been dealt with in the past. The norm of the matter involved the interested party to take the matter to the public of the state in a clear and transparent
manner and judge their perception about the venture by taking a vote.
In case the people of the state approved- showed by a higher number of votes in favour of the proposal- the venture could get a go ahead from the state, otherwise, it would have to be cancelled or revised to make it more attractive to the voters.
Hollywood Slots Hotel and Raceway, which is situated in Bangor is one such facility that got public approval before it got constructed.
During that time, in 2003, there was a move to build another racino which was hoped to be located at the south of Maine. Due to reasons that did not sit well with the people of Maine at that time, the construction of the second facility did not receive the
required amount of votes, and therefore, was not built.
Whereas the proponents of the plan are putting pressure on the lawmakers to legalize it, the opponents are also making a strong case not to and to involve the public in the decision making process as well.
