My wife got a surcharge for $250.00 for next 3 years for not having an insurance card when cop pulled her over. She has the auto insurance but did not have the insurace card with her. Is she still responsible for the surcharge? It seems to be unfair

  1. Contact your local municipal court or better yet, look in your local phone book for an agent with the PIA logo or perhaps NJAAA (New Jersey Auto Agents Alliance) - you should be able to find a professional insurance agent that will help you find out!

In Texas, we have the same type surcharge but ONLY if you actually paid a ticket for No Insurance.  If she didn't pay it you should just be able to show proof of insurance.

Good luck and I hope this helps!

  2. Doesn't seem right.  Did she pay the fine or was it excused ?  If she paid a fine, the surcharge might stick but it seems high.  Maybe you should find a different Insurance company
