State of origin eligibility some food for thought...?

I have a question about state of origin eligibility... This is a situation that whilst very unlikely, could arise in the future.

Situation: John Smith was born in melbourne to two born and bread victorian parents. John played his first rugby league game in the local victorian competition and played in this competition all the way up till he was scouted by the melbourne storm and started playing for them in the toyota cup. After afew years in the toyota cup, he is put straight into the first grade side, skipping the opportunity to play for melbournes feeder clubs in NSW and QLD. John Smith quickly becomes one of the best players in the country however he isn't eligible for either the blues or maroons come origin selection.

what would happen in this situation?

  1. It would be up to John Smith to decide which state he wants to play for I guess. Similar to the K.Hunt situation where he chose to play for Aus over NZ.

  2. Qld inevitably try to poach John Smith, as they have a tendency to falsely claim what they want as their own, possibly on the grounds that John Smith was once seen hollidaying at Surfers Paradise, not sailing on Sydney Habour!

  3. technically he's not going to be eligible for either state, but if QLD want him they will find a way to get him!

  4. I think its up to him to decide which camp he wouold like to side with - NSW or QLD; His decission should be respected if he doe so.

  5. Yerr Queensland ....will try nd poach the player

  6. Like said already it would be completly up to the individual on who he wished to play for...

  7. he would be allowed to play if he is that good of a player, he would just have to choose a state and stick with it

  8. This is more of a question than an answer, but as Canberra has been in the comp for years and isn't NSW or QLD, is their any players that were born and bred in Canberra and worked their way through Canberra Juniors up to first grade. Did they play SOO and if so for who?

  9. he would be given a choice who to play for more than likely. no good sayn qld would try to claim him cause  nsw would do the same. but i'm guessn it would be totally up to the individual himself.
