State of the Indianapolis Colts (Part 2)
This is the second part of a series of article discussing the state of the Indianapolis Colts and what they should do in the upcoming 2011 National Football League (NFL) Draft, set to start on 28 April at Radio City Music Hall in New York, New York.
The Colts had a lot of problems last year with injuries to offensive tackle Charlie Johnson on the left side. He has gritted through them but he is somebody who might wear down and the Colts need to reinforce that position. Carimi is definitely a player
that the Colts need to keep an eye on.
Someone else to look at is Jeff Saturday, who has been center for the Colts for 13 seasons. A potential replacement for him is Mike Pouncey, center for the University of Florida. Now, it is highly unlikely that Pouncey will still be available when the Colts’
22nd overall pick in the first round comes up, but if he is, the Colts need to take a serious look at him.
If Bill Polian, Vice Chairman for the Colts, decides that the team should focus on the defensive side of the ball rather than the offensive with their 22nd overall pick, should they focus on the front, middle or back end of the defensive line
for the Colts?
To find out the answer, all you have to do is take a look at all of the injuries that the Colts had on the back end last year. Strong safety Melvin Bullitt and cornerbacks Kelvin Hayden and Jerraud Powers ended the season on injured reserve. Somewhere in
the middle rounds, the Colts will most likely address their problem with secondaries and someone to look at would be Clemson University defensive back Marcus Gilchrist.
He is someone that allot of general managers and many other people are talking about because he has already played every position in the defensive backfield, whether its nickelback, safety or cornerback. He is perfect Cover-2 cornerback and is also a dynamic
kick returner. When was the last time that the Colts had a good kick returner? Basically, a long, long time ago. Someone who could fill that void is Gilchrist, who would be a valuable asset for the Colts in the middle rounds and could definitely help the team.
But still, the main question for the Colts nowadays is “Do you start to plan for the future when you already have a franchise quarterback in place?” The Green Bay Packers did it with Aaron Rodgers although we don’t know if it was intentional, or just the
way that the draft picks fell into place. Rodgers and Brett Favre were both there and Favre didn’t really seem too happy about it at the time. The same thing happened with Donovan McNabb when he was the quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles. They went ahead
and drafted Kevin Kolb. McNabb tried to put a friendly face on but it didn’t seem as though he was too thrilled about it.
