State of the Indianapolis Colts (Part 3)
This is the third part of a series of article discussing the state of the Indianapolis Colts and what they should do in the upcoming 2011 National Football League (NFL) Draft.
So do the Colts make that move and try to plan for the future, even though it’s hard to believe that they would be able to get a franchise quarterback in their 22nd pick?
The Colts already have so many needs, as mention in the previous articles, that they could certainly address other issues in various positions on the team. But if they do go in the direction for another franchise quarterback, nobody is going to beat Peyton
Manning. Not tomorrow, not the day after, not three years from now, the guy is just too talented.
The only thing that it could do is that if the Colts don’t have Manning signed to a long term contract, it may give the illusion that they are going to move forward with a new franchise quarterback. But it would only be that, an illusion, because there is
no way that the Colts would let Manning go so easily and will most definitely sign him to a long term deal once there is an offseason. Drafting a new quarterback is not a prudent move to make at this time, especially since they have never valued a backup quarterback
in the history of the organization ever since Manning came to Indianapolis.
If you go back to one of Manning’s signature lines in one of his many advertisements, he was there saying “Pound that meat! Pound that meat!” However, if the Colts spend their 22nd overall pick in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft on a quarterback,
Manning will be looking to pound somebody. It’s not because he doesn’t think that the team needs to start looking for his successor, since Manning is going into his 14th year in the NFL, but we are talking about a team where wide receiver Anthony
Gonzalez was out with a knee injury, wide receiver Austin Collie couldn’t come back after suffering concussions and tight end Dallas Clark was out with a wrist injury that required surgery.
When you look at Manning’s offense last year, it just wasn’t as potent as it was in the past. Then you look on the defensive side of the ball. In five games last year, they gave up at least 30 points per game and had a hard time keeping the score down the
entire season.
Manning wouldn’t be thrilled and would be looking to pound somebody if they took a quarterback for their 22nd or even 53rd pick come the Draft. He would rather use the picks to get some players on the team that could help them win right
and worrying about his successor when the time comes.
That’s just about all everyone can do, just wait until the time comes. The first round of the draft will take place on 28 April at Radio City Music Hall in New York, New York.
