  1. One advantage to fish farming is that like any crop, it is a managed proposition from conception to harvest and provides a significant quantity of food from that harvest. Relying on the sea for that same harvest over years has been the source of many problems centering on over fishing. One disadvantage is that the product is costly for an esthetically bland food. Without being "green" in energy consumption, and that is the majority of aquaculture endeavors, it requires more energy per pound of protein, than fishing. In terms that equates to energy from power production vs fuel to power a ship, it costs less to fish from a ship. By allowing the additional produce from aquaponics and attempting to "green up" on power consumption, it gets a bit more economic.

  2. there are many good reasons for fish farming.

    one is more consistent size.

more knowledge of the cleanliness of the product.

ability to grow exponentially more product per acre than in the wild.

    research.

many fish farms raise, fingerlings, for use worldwide and for repopulation of both wild and recreational areas in lakes, rivers, and oceans and seas  around the world.

  3. There are a lot of problems and benefits with Fish Farming.

One of the major benefits with fish farming is that you can "grow" fish with vital amino acids and fatty acids by feeding them pellets seeds that contain these products and you don't have to over-fish the environment to get the fish.

The major downside to fish farming is two-fold. First it destroys the waterway downstream because of the massive amount of waste produced by these fishes. And second because these fishes are being raised in such tight quarters, many viruses and infections spread quickly through a majority of the fish causing massive shortages of fish and sometimes, unhealthy and infected fish can end up on the market for human consumption.
