State some evolutionary advantages that a species gains by defending its territory...?

If it is successful in defending its territory, it gets access to the shelter and food resources in that area.  Also, most territories involve access to mates.  Male songbirds show up to pick out a spot so they will have a territory to hold a nest and for foraging so that a s**y female songbird will be willing to mate with him and pass on his genes.
