The flow of energy represents the work actually done.  A one horsepower motor represents the potential ability to do work if a load is moved by the motor.  Power represents the amount of energy used by the motor to do work in a given time period.  The power company charges you when you run a motor (not because you have one that is shut down).  A one horse power motor is equivalent to 746 watts and if run for one hour consumes 746 watt-hours of power.  1,000 watt-hours equals a kilowatt-hour of power that may cost as little as ten cents (in some areas).  P = EI (Power = voltage x current).
