Static Ip setup help?! I have Comcast.?

Hello. right now I have a dynamic IP address. I want to do a static so I can port foward.

I tried the guide over at portforward.com and it shut my internet off.

So I had to reset the router. Do I need to call comcast to get a static IP?

I am some-what sure I did everything right that the guide told me to do.

It might of been the DNS server IP was not right? Please help!

  1. You need to call Comcast and get a static ip. They will ask you why you need one and are you willing to spend more for the service.

Port forwarding   i would sign up for a proxy service and a DDNS service (dynamic dns).

  2. If all you want to do is enable port forwarding for bit torrent, you can use upnp.  Both your router and utorrent support upnp so you can simply enable upnp on the router and utorrent.  What upnp does for you is allows utorrent to communicate with your router to notify it what ports it needs open.  Static port forwards can be used to punch holes for bittorrent (or other p2p protocols) but some routers put them under the "server" section meaning if you are running a web or mail server.  In this case, then it's not really useful without a static IP.  There are ways to use a dynamic IP to serve websites and mail servers but they involve dynamic dns and much more complexity.

  3. Dont call the comcast but you can do if you using the router just buy it a hub or switch then you can use the static ip address. Making the default gateway the ip address that your comcast providing then you can make the portforwarding use there guidelines.

  4. You set the computer with a static address such as 192.168.1.2 not your router. Leave your router's WAN and LAN addressing as normal.

On your router you forward port range 6881 to 6999 to 192.168.1.2 so that if the base port 6881 is busy, the next address will be used upto 6999.
