  1. Does the phone co say it is a problem on your side of the Demarc?  If so you need to check the phone wiring in your house.  Check all connections looking for moisture, loose connections etc.

  2. Do you have a filter on every phone line?  Check to make sure, it only takes one to cause a problem.

  3. Not sure what you mean by "they say it is DSL" ??? -- Of course it is DSL.. that's the service you are paying for.

Did you mean they say it is the DSL modem?

DSL runs over the same copper wires that your phone line runs over so it sounds to me like it is an issue with the wiring either in your house OR in the main trunk line running from the street to your house/building.

They may have tested it at the house box and since they couldn't hear any static there... they are assuming it is within the house.

    Try this test...

Locate the telephone box on the outside of your house.

Unscrew the panel and open it up.

There should be a "test jack" - a little phone jack on the right side which doesn't have anything plugged into it.

Plug your corded phone into the test jack.  See if you here static.

If you don't.. then it is an issue with the wiring in your house.

If you DO.. then the problem isn't in your house.. it is on the Telco's line.

This procedure is actually listed on the AT&T website, so you are not breaking any laws doing this test.

    Assuming you heard static......

Talk to the Telco and get your issues escalated to a Sr. Wire Tech.  or DSL Specialist.

Otherwise, you may have to cancel service and switch to Cable Internet if the local Telco refuses to take ownership of hte issue.

They may not be owning up to issues in the area.

IF they said it was your DSL modem.. and IF you got the modem from them.. then it is probably leased and they should give you a new one. Otherwise, you can buy a new one from your local computer store for around $50-75

My Parent's house has had REPEATED problems with static and DSL dropping out.  The Telco has admitted that the main trunk line in that area is corroded but they claim the city won't let them dig it up (smoke screen for them not wanting to pay for it)  Voice service is still the Telco's bread n butter.. so they care the most about it.  As long as you can make voice calls.. they aren't that concerned.

They talked my Dad into PAYING out of pocket for an "upgraded" DSL modem for around $120 which is supposedly "less sensitive" to line noise.  Why HE had to pay for issues with THEIR line is beyond me, and makes me angry.  He STILL Has issues even AFTER paying $120 extra.

In my parent's case AT&T have been merely rerouting the troubled lines over different copper, without replacing the line itself. -- It is terrible.
