Question:

Static on phone land line--anyway to repair it myself?

I've had static on my phone line since last week. Looked up the SNI outside the house, tested it, no static when I plugged in my phone in it. So I know static comes from my side (not the phone co.). Disconnected all the phones, filters and DSL, plugged in a phone to each of the jacks, and got static on all the lines. Is there any way I could diagnose and fix it myself since I am broke?? Please help! Not only that, but there is absolutely no cell reception in my house (not sure why)-- so it feels like I'm cut off from everyone...

  1. If static is only inside your house, then there are only a couple probabilities:

1 - Loose connection/s.... inspect all junctions and terminal connections for loose or poor connections.  Poor connections is main reason for static and noise on lines inside the house.  The fact that you do not get noise at demarcation jack but everywhere else in house indicates that the problem is somewhere between the demarcation (or at the demarcation junctions) and your other junctions.

2 - Are you using cordless phones?  Test with a good corded phone.  This will eliminate any questions regarding RFI and interference noise over RF frequencies.

  2. If there is more than 1 pair of wires coming out of the sub. side of the SNI, disconnect  them and check if the static disappears. When you get it isolated to the dead circuit, look for corrosion on the connectors in the jack or at the mounting cord. This shows as a black spot. if this is evident, replace them. If the jacks and cord looks ok, then the wiring its self is defective.

  3. you mentioned filters; when you tested the jacks did you have a filter plugged in?  if you have DSL and haven't had it split to its own extension you will get static on any extensions that do not have the line filters plugged in......
