  1. She's Kannagi.

Strong virtuous lady from tamil folklore

Acccording to ancient book "Silappathikaram" Her husband was wrongly convicted and hanged by King.

She stormed in to the court of king and proved her husband's innocence.Kannagi tore out a breast and flung it on the city, uttering a curse that the entire city be burnt. Due to her utmost chastity, her curse became a reality.

She's reverred as godess in many places

  2. It is KANNAGI, holding anklet

The statue is in Marina Beach Road in CHENNAI, Tamilnadu

    For her history see  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/kannagi

  3. The statue is of Kannagi, wife of Kovalan, and is situated in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

Kannagi's story is described in the novel "Silappadikaram" by Ilango Adigal. Kannagi was a faithful and loving wife. Her husband had fallen in love with a dancer and had left Kannagi. But Kannagi stayed faithful, and accepted her husband when he came back after realizing his mistake.

Soon after they left for Madurai. There, the Queen's anklet was stolen. Kovalan, who had gone to the market to sell Kannagi's anklet (they had fallen on hard times) was wrongly caught and beheaded by the King's guards. Kannagi rushed to the King's palace, and by producing the matching anklet to the one Kovalan was carrying, proved her husband's innocence. She also cursed the King and the Queen, and the entire city of Madurai. The city burnt as a result of her curse.

Kannagi is still treated as a Goddess in some parts of India.

    Hope this helps.
