Stay Thirsty and Uncle Mo work at the Spa for their next assignments
The winner of 2010 Grade 1 Breeders’ Juvenile Cup at Churchill Downs, Uncle Mo, and the winner of this year’s Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes and Grade 1 Travers Stakes both at Saratoga, Stay Thirsty, were sent out on 11 September, 2011, to train ahead of their
next targets.
Both 3-year-old colts are owned by Mike Repole and trained by Todd Pletcher, and both of these talented runners have reached the pinnacle of racing.
Uncle Mo, the 2010 2-year-old champion, has had a dodgy 2011 season, where he had to be sidelined for nearly 5 months because of a rare liver disease he picked up, and got scratched out of the Triple Crown altogether.
The “now” three-year-old horse was aiming higher coming out of a successful season, but got injury stricken and is now fully recovered, the proof was his furious run in the Grade 1 King’s Bishop Stakes, where he got mercilessly nosed out by Caleb’s Posse.
That was Uncle Mo’s first race after the injury, and all over the third this year, with two of them coming prior to the injury.
The Timely Write was won easily at Gulfstream Park on 12 March, 2011, the first race of the year for Uncle Mo, and his next was the Grade 1 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct on 9 April, 2011, where he rolled in third.
Now, Uncle Mo is pointed to run at Belmont Park on Super Saturday 1 October, 2011 and for that the colt turned in a workout for four furlongs, which he completed in 48.36 seconds at Saratoga on 11 September.
On the other hand, stable mate Stay Thirsty also worked at the Spa on the morning of 11 September, where the 3-year-old colt covered half a mile in 50.60 seconds as he prepares for the Grade 1 Jockey Gold Cup at 1 ¼ miles, also at Belmont Park on Super Saturday.
The Bernardini colt is in the form of his life, as he comes off two consecutive major wins, and that too in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy and next up in the Grade 1 Travers Stakes.
The colt before these two races, participated in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes, third leg of the Triple Crown, and finished second behind Ruler on Ice.
