Stay Thirsty en route to Breeders’ Cup not before turning in a solid work at Belmont Park before arriving at Churchill Downs
Just like his stable mate Uncle Mo, Stay Thirsty is also a Breeders’ Cup Classic hopeful and the Mike Repole owned, Todd Pletcher trained 3-year-old colt has been in top form recently.
The son of Bernardini, out of Marozia by Storm Bird, Stay Thirst arrived at Churchill Downs on 24 October, 2011, to continue his preparations for the Breeders’ Cup Classic.
The colt arrived in excellent order along with the rest of the Todd Pletcher’s Breeders’ Cup contingent, and Stay Thirsty will start training over the Churchill Downs training track on 25 October.
Before arriving at Churchill Downs, Stay Thirsty rolled in with Uncle Mo and turned in a five furlong workout with Uncle Mo.
The Grade 1 Travers Stakes winner at Saratoga and a third in his most recent start in the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park, Stay Thirsty went in company with Caixa Eletronica.
Todd Pletcher was pleased with Stay Thirsty’s work and said that he worked really well. Stay Thirsty has always been under the shadow of Uncle Mo, but recently Stay Thirsty has put in some awesome performances which have made his name shine among all the
good ones.
His 23 October workout speaks of the fact that he has come a long way. It was a solid aggressive work and he finished up well and galloped out great and the colt was very willing throughout.
The aim was to set up Stay Thirsty with a tougher work, even more than the previous one and he took up the challenge and performed at his best.
Stay Thirsty turned his season around after a second place finish in the Grade 1 Belmont Stakes over at 1 ½ miles behind the surprised winner Ruler on Ice at Belmont Park.
Then back to back wins in important races, starting from a win in the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratoga and then moving on to the biggest race in the Saratoga meeting, the Grade 1 Travers Stakes over at 1 ¼ miles.
Over at the same distance in Jockey Club Gold Cup, Stay Thirsty wilted in the final strides and gave way to Drosselmeyer to finish a couple of lengths behind Flat Out for second place.
