Stay Thirsty turned in his second work at Belmont Park
From Mike Repole’s, Repole Stable owned 4-year-old colt, Stay Thirsty was seen the swiftest out of nine workers at Belmont Park on 11 May, 2012, when the Todd Pletcher trained colt breezed five furlongs in 1 minute and 0.28 seconds.
Bred in Kentucky by John D. Gunther, Stay Thirsty aims to start to get his new campaign in the summer at Belmont Park. With variety of races to start from, Todd Pletcher hasn’t unveiled the colt’s first start, but it will be sooner because the colt does need a prep race after a long layoff.
Pletcher will be aiming at something huge for Stay Thirsty going in to the summer, and at Belmont Park after the Belmont Stakes, which he isn’t eligible for and second in the event last year, in the Grade 1 Whitney Handicap – which could be where Stay Thirsty is pointed.
If that is the case, than expect Stay Thirsty to be on a gruelling work tab, and if Todd Pletcher isn’t happy with things by the time he is nearing the Whitney Handicap, he might add one more race to an already a single race preparation for the colt.
Stay Thirsty blossoms in the summer time, and he showed it last year that he runs well in the summer.
The Bernardini colt started off well as a sophomore and downed the Grade 3 Gotham Stakes after starting four times as a juvenile without much success.
However, the rest of the prep races including the Kentucky Derby weren’t that convincing, as he finished seventh in the Grade 1 Florida Derby and 12th in the Grade 1 Kentucky Derby.
Stay Thirsty really picked up at New York in the Belmont Stakes, where he finished a short distance adrift of Ruler on Ice in second.
Sent straight to Saratoga after his Belmont Stakes stint, Stay Thirsty who raced under the shadow of his stable mate, Uncle Mo, really shined in the mid 2011 season by landing the Grade 2 Jim Dandy Stakes at about 1 1/8 miles and the Grade 1 Travers Stakes, the biggest race he has won thus far.
It was Stay Thirsty’s second workout since arriving from Palm Meadows to Belmont Park, and the first one on 5 May, where he drilled 5 furlongs in 1 minute and 1.45 seconds.
